The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has gained 12% so far in 2026, extending a bull market fueled mostly by enthusiasm around artificial intelligence (AI). However, the rally has not been without some turbulence. Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) recently witnessed sharp declines as investors grapple with sticky inflation, elevated bond yields, and concerns about how the AI revolution is being financed. There’s another reason investors should be cautious. The CAPE ratio and Buffett indicator suggest the stock market is historically expensive. In fact, the CAPE ratio has climbed above 40, a level previously sustained only during the dot-com bubble.

For three weeks, Wall Street sold the hottest trade in the market and bought one of the oldest. Chip stocks lost 15% while Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway gained 7%.
That swing carried Berkshire’s Class B stock (BRK-B) to a record close Tuesday, its first since May 2, 2025 — the day before Buffett said he would hand the CEO job to Greg Abel. The stock pushed to an intraday record Wednesday, as did the Class A stock (BRK-A).
The wait took 17 months, a stretch in which the S&P 500 (^GSPC) gained more than 35%.

Brent crude futures settled 3 cents, or 0.03% higher, at $108.82 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate crude closed down 67 cents, or 0.7%, at $97.15.Both benchmarks had gained more than $2 earlier in the session, with Brent hovering near five-month highs.
In the previous session, Brent hit its highest in five months while WTI touched a six-month peak before prices fell on a discussion about mediation efforts in a meeting between Iran’s president and Pakistan’s army chief in Tehran.

Housing Market Is Stuck as Mortgage Rates Top 7%

Mortgage rates dipped slightly last week but remain well above 7%, leading to an 18% yearly drop in demand.
Meanwhile, pending home sales fell 7.3% in the most recent month and housing starts dropped to levels not seen since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Add in the weakest builder confidence reading in October since 2012 and there’s only one conclusion to be drawn: The housing market is dormant.
“Though builders are also contending with higher costs for construction loans, building materials and diesel, the Trump administration’s efforts to advance regulatory reform are helping to ease some of the cost pressures they face,” National Association of Home Builders Chairman Bill Owens, a home builder and remodeler from Worthington, Ohio, said. “Nationwide, more than one-third of builders reported immigration enforcement activity in their market areas during the past month, causing construction delays and discouraging legal workers from reporting to work.”

We’ve said repeatedly that AI is powerful, it’s everywhere and it’s here to stay. Still, there are many dangers associated with AI that are being swept under the rug by major frontier AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.
One of the dangers in finance is that AI is being used for portfolio management and even to execute specific stock, bond and currency trades. That may produce positive returns initially.
The difficulty is that, as more portfolio managers adopt AI, algorithms trained on overlapping data and built with similar structures could quickly produce herd behavior. This herd behavior could trigger a panic because the algorithms lack human common sense and independent judgment.

This year has been one for the record books, with the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC), and Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) all reaching multiple all-time highs.
But what goes up must come down eventually. Bond yields are at their highest levels in decades, raising borrowing costs for consumers and making debt more expensive for companies spending billions of dollars on the AI build-out. Concerns about AI debt have shaken the market recently, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq experiencing its worst week in months.
